High Blood pressure or hypertension is a common problem in adults. Millions of Americans are suffering from hypertension every year and the number is only rising.  In hypertension your artery walls get forced by blood and the pressure is high enough to cause different heart disease. Most of the time hypertension patients develop heart blockage. Also increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.   • Supplement to widen vasodilators (blood vessels) or increase nitric oxide. Example, garlic, coenzyme Q10 and cocoa
  • Fiber containing foods (e.g. blond psyllium, wheat bran etc.)
  • Minerals (e.g. potassium and calcium)High blood pressure supplements
  • Omega-3 fatty acids

While it’s best to add these supplements to your diet list as foods, there are also pills or capsules available with the same components. Some supplements can cause harmful side effect by interacting with other medications. Some home remedies also can give long-term result, practice deep relaxation technique, yoga or deep breathing can help you to reduce stress levels and feel relax. As a result also reduce blood pressure temporarily.

Best high blood pressure supplements to take

  1. Psyllium: According to the journal of the American Diabetes Association, whole grains that contains high amount of fiber reduces hypertension, you can take instead of refined carbohydrates. Also, hypertension diet, popularly known as DASH diet that focuses on vegetables, fruits and high fiber can help you to reduce high blood pressure.
  2. Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA): Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), also called timnodonic acid is a type of omega-3 fatty acid and polyunsaturated in nature. eicosapentaenoic acid can slightly decrease your blood pressure level. The sources of this type of fatty acid are mainly animal fat, Omega-3 supplements, fatty fish and cod liver. Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is also an omega-3 fatty acid and a primary structural component of human brain, skin, sperm and retina. Although, Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are both fatty acid, but they’re not the same. Sometimes Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can be converted to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).  Docosahexaenoic acid contained fatty acid found mostly in cold water fishes. For example, tuna, halibut, salmon, cod liver, sea blubber and whale blubber.
  1. Alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA): This is also similar to Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in plants (e.g. walnuts and flax). Different research shows that this type of omega-3 acid has the power of healing high blood pressure slowly. From the above three types of sources we can understand there is no way to avoid fatty acid as a high blood pressure supplements.
  2. Calcium: Scientists are still trying to find the relationship between calcium and hypertension.The lower calcium person seems to have a higher risk of hypertension, so calcium is one of the important high blood pressure supplements. According to dieticians an adult need 1000 mg calcium per day and for over 50 years people the need is 1200 mg per day. Ensuring a proper balance of calcium can stop your other high blood pressure supplements habit.
  3. Garlic: From the ancient time garlic has been used as a natural supplement for different types of disease. It can decrease high blood pressure slightly. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians reports, the effect of garlic in case of blood pressure is very weak and need further research.
  4. Cocoa: A dark chocolate component cocoa contains a compound called flavanols. Cocoa can be a high blood pressure supplements. American Heart Association, researchers found cocoa to have the ability to decrease hypertension.
  5. Potassium:  You should cut extra sodium form your diet menu, instead add enough potassium supplements. Typically we take more sodium than potassium. Instead of supplementing, potassium should be take from foods. Some sources of potassium are orange, kiwi fruit, pears, avocado and banana etc. Potassium can be a great source of high blood pressure supplements and obviously limit hypertension.
  6. Coenzyme Q-10: Although the human body normally can produce enough coenzyme Q-10, but so of us have a deficiency. Coenzyme Q-10 supplements are able to control both systolic and diastolic blood pressures.
  7. Magnesium: Like potassium, magnesium can be a supplement to promote normal blood pressure level. Some sources of magnesium from food are, beans, broccoli, spinach,  tofu, okra etc.
  8. Soy milk: Soy milk can be a high blood pressure supplements, especially when conjunction with fiber food.  A study conducted by PeaceHealth, the soy milk supplement can reduce diastolic blood pressure by 5 mm Hg and 15.9 mm Hg respectively.

High blood pressure supplements to avoid

Some over the counter medicine considered as no effect can have long-term effect in case of hypertension. So this type of medications should be avoided or should take after consulting with a doctor. Some of them are as follows:

  1. Ginseng: used to lower blood sugar, make immune system stronger and decrease fatigue, but has a harmful effect in case of high and low blood pressure.
  2. Yohimbine: Was popular for erectile dysfunction and now the popularity decreased and has many side effects.
  3. Bitter orange: used as a weight loss supplement.  It has a significant effect on  stroke and heart attack.
  4. Ephedra: Similar to bitter orange as a weight loss supplement and now banned in the US market because of safety concern.
  5. Echinacea: Considered as a helpful supplement to cold and flu related disease. Although when taking high blood pressure supplements, it should be avoided.

Some supplements that can raise hypertension

Some over the counter medications have proven effects on raising blood pressure. They are as follows:

  1. Acetaminophen: people how take acetaminophen has a higher risk of developing high blood pressure compared to those who don’t take it. Although occasional acetaminophen has no effect, but better consult with a doctor.
  2. Caffeine: Still a controversial issue. Should avoid caffeine pills and drinks. It can block blood vessels temporarily.
  3. Hormonal birth control pills: Not every woman has found with side effects, but pills and other hormonal birth control devices may increase hypertension. Have higher risk if the woman is a smoker, over 35 years old and overweight.
  4. Antidepressant: These types of medication change brain reaction to body response. Regular blood pressure check is necessary for antidepressant takers. Some example, that can raise blood pressure are Venlafaxine, Bupropion and Desipramine.
  5. Pain killers: Certain anti-inflammatory and pain killer medication can cause high blood pressure, kidney problems and many serious complications. Examples are, Indomethacin, Naproxen, Piroxicam, Ibuprofen, Meloxicam.

Before taking high blood pressure supplements, consult with a doctor. If you already have other complications like depression, physical pain or other complications don’t forget to inform those problems when visiting a doctor.
